Looking for a reason to head to Oklahoma City this summer? Jacksons of Enid CDJR has a line on all the best events happening in the big city to the south. It’s only a 90-minute drive, it’s fun to get out of town, and the weather’s great. Take a look at our list of happenings worth piling the family in your car to see, once you’re done rotating your own tires!

Americana Fest

Hosted by the American Banjo Museum every June, this family-friendly music festival will showcase some of the best roots music in the country, including the Byron Berline Band, Steelwind, and the All Stars Youth Banjo Band alongside shows, prizes, and summertime treats. Children 15 and younger can attend Americana Fest for free, while adult admission is only $10. Even if you’re going with the kids and their friends, it’s easy on your wallet!

Stars & Stripes River Festival

This yearly June festival draws visitors far and wide for the Riversport Challenge race that pushes contestants to complete a consecutive 200m kayak race and 5k run, along with rowing, dragon boats, whitewater raft racing, and fireworks. Of course, even if you’re not up for a race, the free-of-charge 4th of July themed Stars & Stripes River Festival is a great way for families to get out and enjoy the water at RIVERSPORTS Adventures. Live music from Avenue kicks off the venue’s Hudiburg Summer Music Series in late afternoon, while food trucks on-hand give observers choosing to relax with options of their own.

Oklahoma City Zoo Sales Tax Appreciation Day

In 1990, the citizens of Oklahoma City passed a referendum that dedicated a ⅛-cent sales tax to the Oklahoma City Zoo. In recognition of that vote of confidence, the Zoo hosts Sales Tax Appreciation Day every year on the second Tuesday of July, offering free admission to anyone of any age who comes to enjoy its many exhibits of endangered, interesting, and essential fauna from the world over.

Oklahoma Summer Bash

Hosted by Illegal Toys Lowrider Car Club every summer, the Oklahoma Summer Bash at the downtown Cox Convention Center is an entirely indoor (that means air-conditioned!) car show, featuring vehicles classic and modern, modified for eye-popping attention. Drivers as far away as Louisiana and Colorado bring rides to this celebration of electric paint jobs, bouncing wheels, loud bass, flashing headlights, and giant rims, while event organizers host a number of classes that teach attendees how these enhancements are made and maintained. Stop by the pre-show hop contest off-site that pays out a cash prize to the car with the biggest bounce, check out live music form a number of hip-hop’s bigger names, and you’ll see early on why this isn’t an event to be missed.
