If you’ve ever headed out to the hills, valleys, and mountains beyond the great plains surrounding the Kingfisher area, you know the importance of detailed preparation before driving your Jeep Wrangler or RAM truck off the beaten path. That’s why we’ve compiled this important off-roading checklist, to make sure you leave no stone unturned when it comes to experiencing the wilderness from behind the wheel. Recovery Necessities

Nothing brings an end to a great trip like a deep pit, or a basic maintenance issue gone awry. That’s why you should bring along a standard set of recovery tools to get yourself out of the more basic jams you might find yourself in when you’re off the beaten path:

  • Straps and shackles – If you find yourself buried up to your bumper in mud, you’ll need a second vehicle, along with a snatch strap with a minimum breaking strength that’s three or four times bigger than your vehicle, along with a set of shackles.
  • Recovery boards – Nylon cleated tire shoes for particularly muddy situations make driving out of a stuck position a lot easier. Go after a brand like MaxTrax – it might seem unnecessary to drop a few hundred dollars on these, but serious Hennessey off-road enthusiasts swear by their utility.
  • Jump starter – If you’re out at night, or taxing your vehicle’s battery with custom accessories, a portable jump starter is an essential tool while you’re out in the wilderness so you don’t have to rely on passersby to get you moving again.

Basic Repair Tools

Be prepared to make simple fixes to your vehicle with basic repair tools, including:

  • Rechargeable, adjustable, magnetic work light with attached hooks
  • Tire repair kit, jack, and a couple of old boards
  • All-in-one hand tools with wrenches, drivers, and pliers
  • Work gloves

One of the most important off-road tips you should consider is being prepared to tighten up nuts and bolts that get knocked loose by obstacles, and to get flat tires re-inflated without having to take up limited cabin space with an entire spare wheel. Using old boards to provide a flat surface to place your jack, and having the necessary tools to repair instead of change tires can go a long way on dirt pathways.

Navigation Technology

It goes without saying that you’ll end up in unfamiliar territory when you go off-road. So when you’re thinking about what to bring off-roading, think about the capabilities of your Uconnect® system, and supplement with an app like Hema Maps Explorer or something similar.
