In the guide below, join the Jacksons of Enid CDJR service center technicians and learn how to properly jump start a car, what to do if your car won’t jump start, and how to find jump start car service in your area.

What Does it Mean to Jump Start a Car Battery?

When you jump start a car battery, you’re simply connecting your dead car battery to a good battery with jumper cables, so that power from the good battery flows into the dead battery and charges it up. It’s a good idea to always keep a set of jumper cables in your trunk, just in case you or another driver needs a jump start. Next, we’ll look at the proper way to jump start a car so that you can get back to driving in Woodward with confidence.

How to Properly Jump Start a Car

If you need to jump start a car battery, grab your jumper cables and a friend’s car and follow these steps:

  1. Park the other car so it’s facing yours.
  2. Put both vehicles in Park or Neutral and engage the parking brake.
  3. Turn both vehicles’ keys to the Lock (first) ignition position.
  4. Open the hood on each car and find the battery, which is usually protected by a plastic hood in most vehicles. Lift the hood to access the battery terminals.
  5. Find the positive (marked “+”) and negative (marked “-”) battery terminals and check them for corrosion.
  6. Take the red jumper cable and attach one end to your battery’s positive terminal. Connect the cable’s other end to the positive terminal on the other car’s battery.
  7. Next, take the black cable and attach one end to the negative terminal of the good battery.
  8. Take the opposite end of the black cable and clamp it to an unpainted metal surface on your vehicle’s body, any place away from the battery.
  9. Check to ensure that all 4 clamps are secure. Now start the engine of the other car.
  10. Run the engine for about 5 minutes, and then try starting your engine.
  11. If your car starts, you now know how to jump start a car battery!
  12. To ensure that your battery recharges fully, drive the car for at least 15 minutes.

Most of the time, the steps above should restore power to your battery, but it’s possible that your car won’t jump start. Keep reading to find out what to do if your engine still won’t start after attempting a jump start.
